     It is an age-old saying- 'Artists see the world differently'... Perhaps it is truer to say-

'Artists see the world'. 

     Every artist had a beginning. And, every successful artist will say, "The path to success is paved with mistakes." Success requires

space and time...

space for mistakes and time spent working toward a goal.

     This week we made paint, looked at a few contemporary photographers, discussed 18th Century British painting and made assemblages from found objects... with plenty of space and time to spare.

The Hinge Pin of Life

The Art Room

There is underneath my wife's painting easel a wooden box containing brushes and supplies. One day I noticed its hinges. A hinge is a beautiful thing; a device which allows the lid to open and close, it is composed of three parts: two plates and a hinge pin. And then, it occurred to me- in this life I am one of the plates, my calling is the other and Jesus is the hinge pin. The three compose a working unity, the parts fitting together naturally. I am called to teach. If ever I choose to replace the hinge pin of my life with something temporal- money, selfish ambition, etc., the hinge is destined to decay. I am grateful that God has called me to a Christian school, a place where I can freely share the love and teachings of Christ Jesus, the ultimate model. 

Teaching teenagers is an interesting calling; trying to understand them is like staring at a black and white rainbow- we know there must be more, but how do we bring out the color? Goals and Objectives are designed to produce measurable results. A good teacher knows that some results, however, are long term. Sometimes a lesson plants a seed that may take years to mature. 


Many seeds have been planted this year.
