back to the simple...

Treaty of Penn
Benjamin West

"For me, intellectual intelligence is the sublime level of intelligence which has produced all the masterpieces in the history of mankind. It is the thread that guides us to the best solution of whatever we do. It is the definitive goal of our minds- the one beyond compromises."
Massimo Vignelli

The ancients knew that the world is ever-changing.
And they didn't have Google. Today, my students capture High-Res photos with their telephone... and do not express wonder at this marvel of technology. They exude expectancy- they expect their portable device to provide photos, music, entertainment, information... they are digital natives. Perhaps that is why I feel a little giddy inside when I show them how to take a photograph with a cardboard oatmeal box. One student actually exclaimed, "That's impossible! There's no button to push!" Or, how about making paint with water, an egg yolk and dirt? Speaking of dirt, we throw clay on a wheel in the manner potters have used for thousands of years- foot powered! It is comforting to me that in the midst of an ever-changing world there are things that remain. And it is a wonder to re-experience the simple things.
